Space Norway – critical infrastructure from the subsea to outer space.
Space Norway is Norway’s largest space enterprise and a significant satellite operator globally. The company ensures stable access to broadcasting services for millions of people, and satellite-based broadband communication in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the North Atlantic. At the same time, Space Norway develops and operates space-based infrastructure for national needs.
Space Norway owns and operates a fleet of satellites in geostationary and high elliptical orbits. The fleet consists of ASBM 1 and 2 and THOR 5, 6, and 7, in addition to partial ownership in THOR 10-02. Space Norway also owns and operates the Nittedal ground station outside Oslo.
The two ASBM satellites (Arctic Satellite Broadband Mission) runs in a high elliptical, polar orbit to provide coverage in the Arctic. They provide broadband access to the Armed Forces, US Space Force, and Viasat from 65 degrees north to the North Pole.
The THOR satellites are in geostationary position at 1 degree west, ensuring broadcasting services to the Nordics and Central and Eastern Europe. Additionally, the Thor fleet provides commercial access to data services in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as the North Atlantic – both on land and at sea. Space Norway collaborates with major broadcasting companies, leading satellite operators, and public and commercial enterprises that relay services from the THOR satellites.
Through its subsidiary Statsat, the group also operates small satellites on behalf of the Norwegian Space Agency and the Norwegian Coastal Administration. Space Norway also owns and operates two subsea fibre cables from the Norwegian mainland to Svalbard. Without these cables, it would be impossible to develop business and maintain a modern society in Svalbard.
In addition to existing infrastructure, Space Norway continuously develops new space infrastructure in different orbits and for various purposes. The radar satellite MicroSAR, the first in a constellation, is an example of new capacity under construction.
Space Norway consists of around 180 employees. The headquarter is in Oslo. The company is wholly owned by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries. Space Norway owns 50 percent of the shares in Kongsberg Satellite Services.
